7. You clearly put a lot of thought into durability-can you talk about why you chose these specific materials?
  • Roof is Corning asphalt shingles with a limited lifetime warranty andincludes Owens Corning system protection roofing with a 50 year warranty all installedby the local roofer
  • Metal roofing and siding only have a 2 year guarantee when within 2 kmof an ocean so not ideal for the area we live in
  • Asphalt shingles are much quieter, especially as Ucluelet gets extremethunderous rainfall, and also safer to walk on, easier to repair and clean
  • The siding was chosen because it is a complete system with no exposedfasteners, is waterproof, not just water resistant like hardy board or cedar,is maintenance free and scores an 11 on durability

  • High RV value is a no brainer, free money in the bank
  • The woodstove was chosen for 2 reasons. Firstly, for its striking appearance. Who doesn’t like a burgundy woodstove with brushed nickel accents?  Secondly, it has an outside fresh air intakefor added comfort and efficiency with a large capacity fire box.  The woodstove heats the entire house and isour main source of heat during the colder months
  • The crawlspace is heated which results in a warm floor
10. You included multiple backup systems-what was your thinking behind that?
  • Power failures are inevitable living in Ucluelet, a generator is a mustto keep essential household services running (fridge, freezer, grinder pump, stovetop, coffee maker, internet, lighting, sauna/hot tub receptacle)
  • Back up heat that does not rely on electricity is important.  We have several in our home.  The large woodstove and 3 propane fireplaceson battery ignitors.  Plus you can put akettle or cast iron pots on the woodstove cooktop
11. A lot of what you built is hidden-can you tell me more about what we don’t see in photos?

  • Extra thick underlay creating a softer floor that is easier on the bones
  • All interior doors are custom solid hardwood
